When I think of farms, I don’t necessarily think of the rustic, country-house kind. Maybe it’s the smell of freshly turned earth or the sight of a whitewashed house with lively green pastures in the background. The type of farm immediately comes to mind is probably something more like organic or artisanal—a homestead where you can sample fresh local produce at breakfast and see cows grazing at lunch. But even though farming isn’t necessarily my thing (eek!), there are plenty of places in Wisconsin where you can spend the night at a family-owned farm and experience agriculture from an authentic perspective. These farm stays are precisely that—sleeping on a local farm so that you can experience life from the family farmer’s point of view. So what are you waiting for? Here are our recommendations for farm stays in the area!

Northome Farm Stay

The Northome Farm Stay is a homestead in the hills of Wisconsin that has been in the same family since 1873. The farm is 1,200 feet above sea level, and you can stay at their rustic farmhouse with a warm, country bed! They also offer several rustic accommodations like cabins and camping spaces, but we recommend the farmhouse because of its unique location and historic charm.

Olde Starving Homestead

Olde Starving Homestead is located in West Salem, Wisconsin—just 20 minutes from Madison and an hour from Chicago. This authentic farm stay offers several different types of accommodations: a cozy cabin for two people, a small apartment for up to four guests (with one bedroom), or a large home with four bedrooms. All these options come with your private bathroom and access to their shared kitchen, so you don’t have to go far for breakfast or dinner!

Homestead Inns & Suites B&B Farmstay in Oconomowoc County, WI

The Homestead Inns & Suites B&B Farmstay is located just outside Oconomowoc County and only 15 minutes from the city center! You can choose from either the Homestead Inn or the Suites Inn for your stay at this authentic homestead—both have three rooms (two queen beds) and an outdoor pool. They also offer a variety of farm-inspired activities like milking (in season) and cheese making, as well as a farm tour on Sunday mornings.

Eau Claire Homestead Farm Stay

Eau Claire Homestead Farm Stay is located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin—just one hour north of Madison! They offer their guests the chance to stay on their 100-acre property with access to their private suite or cabin for two people. In addition to the remote suite/cabin, they also have a rustic place for up to four people or an apartment for six. The farm stay has a small kitchenette and shared bathroom, but guests are welcome to use the kitchen and full kitchen in the main house if needed.

Maple Grove Inn Bed and Breakfast, Maple Grove

Maple Grove Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in Maple Grove, Wisconsin—just 15 minutes from Madison! They offer a variety of different rooms to choose from, including the Bunkhouse (a private room with bunk beds), the Log Cabin (a rustic cabin with a full kitchen), or the Log Cabin Suite (a rustic suite with two bedrooms). All these options come with your private bathroom and access to their shared kitchen, so you don’t have to go far for breakfast or dinner!

Countryside Farm Hostel and Bed & Breakfast, Prairie du Sac

This authentic farm stay comes with several options for guests: a rustic cabin for up to four people, a large house with four bedrooms, or a cabin that sleeps up to six people. When you leave the city behind, you might think having more space and green pastures will be a plus. But in the end, life is about balance and routine. When you leave the city behind, your schedule often changes, you give up certain conveniences (like traffic and public transportation), and you make many sacrifices. You have to learn how to adjust to a new routine and live with less. A farm is not just a farm; it’s also a lifestyle. It can be challenging at first, but as soon as you settle in, it becomes alluring. The good news is that moving from the city to a farm isn’t as difficult as it might seem — provided that you want to do it.

What will it be like living on a farm?

When you move to a farm, you’ll have many opportunities to learn how to live off the land. You’ll learn how to grow vegetables, raise animals and make your products. You’ll have a chance to meet new people and get acquainted with the local community. The farm lifestyle is also great for those who enjoy outdoor activities and adventure.

How will live on a farm affect my family?

If you have kids, they’ll love having the freedom of being able to run around outside without worrying about getting lost or hurt. They’ll be able to watch their favorite shows in peace without having the TV blaring in the background. The family will be able to spend more time together and get closer due to moving from the city to a farm.

How will it affect my work?

When you move from the city, you might be concerned about losing your job — but that shouldn’t be an issue as long as you don’t let it become one. The first thing you should do is talk with your employer so that they can adapt their schedules accordingly. Your coworkers might also need some extra time so they can adjust, too — but there are ways they can help ease your transition so that you won’t feel left out when everyone else starts working differently than before (for example, by helping with chores). If necessary, ask for help from other coworkers as well.

How will I pay for my family?

For most people, a farm isn’t an option unless you have a lot of money to spare or you’re eligible for financial aid. If you don’t have that much money, it might be possible to find a way to get government help (for example, by moving into an affordable housing unit). Otherwise, the best option is to get a job in your area. The more time and effort you invest into your job search, the more likely you’ll land a great position within your desired industry.

What are some of the benefits of farming?

Farming is an exciting way for people to engage with the world. The job demands you to be alert, focused, and on your toes since everything is different. It’s a lot of fun meeting new people and learning something new daily. You’ll develop a sense of responsibility, learn to work hard, keep things orderly, and get more robust in physical fitness. You might also develop a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and its intricate balance.

Why would you want to live on a farm?

Before moving to a farm, you need to ask yourself why you want to live there. What is it that draws you there? Is it the weather, the greenery, or the lifestyle? The truth is that most people want to live on a farm for many reasons. It’s fun, relaxing, and offers an opportunity to escape from fast-paced city life. It’s also a chance to reconnect with nature and live in harmony with the environment. Many people who choose to move from the city to a farm have health issues or are interested in living a more natural lifestyle. Living on a farm can be very beneficial for your health — especially if you have concerns about your weight or are looking for ways to improve your overall well-being.

What kind of property do you need?

The type of property that will suit your needs depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to live and what kind of activities you enjoy doing after work hours. If you don’t mind commuting between the city and the farm — which is often necessary if you work part-time in both places — then renting one room in someone else’s home might be all right until you save up enough money to buy your business.

Moving from the city to a farm is an excellent idea for those who love country life and wish to have a healthier lifestyle and environment. Since many people choose to live on farms for health reasons, you must be physically fit before moving on to the farm. Knowing your budget and being financially ready before making such a big decision is also essential.
