Our herd now numbers about 30 does and two bucks. The goats are proving to be easy keepers and pleasant animals to have at the farm.
Goat meat is gaining popularity as the demand for healthier, low-fat meats increases. It is also a staple among certain groups, including Mexicans, Central Americans, some Texans, Filipinos, Caribbean Islanders, West Africans and people from the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The young goat kids are often purchased for religious holidays and feasts.
Spanish goats are a heritage landrace, and are known for their hardiness and maternal instincts. There are less than 8,000 of these animals left. They are classified as a high conservation priority status by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. By raising these animals , we are helping to conserve a genetic resource that might otherwise be lost forever.
